Why Kendra Cambridge is Tuff Like Iron

Cambridge is the illest leader of fashion's new school. It is hard to imagine a student barely out of college creating a line as mouth-watering as Tuff Like Iron! Forever fashion-forward, Cambridge started designing three years ago and made the move to retail her work in 2004. From Jamaica to Japan, Kendra keeps folks fly every step of the way. Now that New York has been Tuffened-up, Tuff Like Iron is ready to outfit the globe!

Tuff Like Iron is what happens when life and fashion intersect. The line knits Kendra's love of diverse music, urban realities and black aesthetic for clothing that is raw, fluid, colorific and socially conscious all at once. Cambridge has perfected the art of guerilla design, as seen in her witty use of plastic lanyard ("strings" for New Yorkers) to create her whimsical signature earrings, for real unorthodox style. Tuff Like Iron pieces are veritable scrapbooks of vintage photos, movies like Rockers and Kendra's splendid experience of growing up in the cultural mélange that is Brooklyn all freshly stitched and ready to roll.

What is it about Tuff Like Iron that makes the line so cotton candy delicious? Cambridge's pairing of techniques other designers traditionally separate! While many designers highlight pieces that display a mastery of a single form such as sewing, Cambridge has developed a fashion feast displaying dexterous use of screen printing, sewing and crocheting for clothing to intriguing to pass up.

Kendra is all about turning shared life experiences into wearable artworks that challenge the environments in which they are rocked. Her greatest inspiration stems from the dull realities of New York life- the concrete, the asphalt, the glass. Frustrated by the reality that nature is practically non-existent, Cambridge picked up her tool kit. Instead of being disillusioned by the gray days, she constructed clothing to bring the island vybes to the many islands in NYC in a bold attempt redesign the landscape.
